A number of plants have the ability to recruit and support microbes to help them in a variety of ways and they offer the products of photosynthesis as a reward to those microbes. The metabolites produced by, or the derivatives obtained from, certain microbes also give benefit to plants. Beneficial Microbes can broadly provide benefit to agricultural plants by:
· Increasing soil nutrient availability, particularly in the rhizosphere (the area around the plant roots), or stimulating the useful production of plant growth hormones. Inoculants and Biofertilizers/Bionutrients are the products that contain these types of microbes and their derivatives.
· Improving natural metabolic processes (such as increasing nutrient uptake efficiency etc), enhancing tolerance of abiotic or biotic stresses and improving crop quality (such as increasing shelf life or flavour etc). Plant Biostimulants and Bioadjuvants are the products that contain these types of microbes and their derivatives.
· Preventing plant diseases and pests. Microbes can be used as Biocontrol Agents (BCAs) preventing proliferation of plant pathogens and other pests. The incidence and severity of such challenges can be very effectively reduced through direct effects such as parasitism and/or disruption of crucial systemic functions.Additionally microbes with antifungal activities compete against pathogens by rapidly colonizing aerial plant parts and roots, using most of the available nutrients, and thus making it difficult for pathogens to grow. Biopesticides in the form of Biofungicides, Bioinsecticides, Bionematicides and Bioherbicides are the products that contain these types of microbes and their derivatives.
